We are a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization.  If you would like to sponsor any "rescue friendly" dog on the site they would greatly appreciate you.  We are in dire need of sponsors and foster homes!!
Welcome to the Ohio Pound Pals site originated in June 2008 for the owners, foster parents, and abandoned dogs in the need of finding "Urgent" forever homes!

Our focus is to help Ohio high-kill shelters find rescue's and homes for unwanted animals.  Specifically we had been helping the Carroll County Dog Pound . This pound only holds 18 pens and numerous dogs are in need of "Urgent" placement every day.  A significant amount of dogs are owner surrendered and found as strays every day making it hard to keep the pound at a controllable vacancy.  Puppies are also being dropped off with no appropriate care in litters.

The warden likes to keep the pound with open pens because of the mass quantity of dogs in the county and drop-off's from surrounding counties.  Please inquire or adopt the dog of interest before Thursday.  This is the day to make space and it is very important you go before then!!  THIS POUND DOES NOT HOLD DOGS!!

Surrendering your dog to the pound significantly increases his/her chances for euthanization, especially if it is towards the end of the week.  DO NOT ASSUME YOUR PET WILL BE RESCUED IF SURRENDERED..ESPECIALLY ON THURSDAYS OR FRIDAYS!!  Many rescue's are full right now making it very difficult to get immediate placement.

If you are a Stark or Carroll County, Ohio resident please contact us before surrendering your dog to the pound.  PLEASE do not wait until a week before you need to surrender.  It is nearly impossible to find a home or rescue for your dog such a short notice and we want your dog to be safely placed.  To increase chances of happy adoption we highly recommend you have your dog heartworm checked, spay/neutered, placed on flea and heartworm prevention, and have all shots up-to-date.

All of the Ohio pounds/shelters are always in dire need of volunteers such as temporary fostering, transportation, donations, host/hostessing adopt-a-thons, walking and socializing dogs, cleaning, and whatever else comes to mind.  Every facility has their own volunteer privilege guidelines, so please respect their domain.

We ARE NOT a rescue!!  We are here to mediate the safety of animals of Ohio residents before surrendering to the pound.
SURRENDERING YOUR PET

Did you know:

Just because a shelter may be "Rescue Friendly" does not mean your pet is free from death.  Some shelters euthanize on a daily basis due to overpopulation and rescue's don't have a chance to free them from dying.

Surrendering your pet is not re-homing it.  It could mean a horrible death sentence or a life of misery and pain.  You don't know who will have your pet next.

When your pet is adopted out of a shelter, there is no screening so your pet may be used as a "bait dog" or other cruelty acts.

NEVER post your pet as "Free to a good home" in an ad.  Many crazy people are looking for those ads to perform cruel and inhumane acts to your pet.  They will offer you alot of money for  your pet.

Your pet is exposed to the unthinkable and deadly diseases in shelters.   If your pet were to get sick in the shelter, it will be destroyed.  There are no funds nor tolerance for vetting.

As friendly as your dog may be at home, being in a strange environment with lots of noise, noone to hug and kiss them, and sleeping on a hard floor may cause your pets temperament to change.  With that said.....guess what happens to your pet?!  The warden cannot chance adopting your pet out and therefore will be euthanized.
BOTTOM LINE.......You have no clue what is happening to your loved pet!!!!!
WINNINGS WILL BE DONATED TO SURROUNDING COUNTY SHELTERS IN NEED

*Our goal is to improve the quality of life for the animals in Stark County, OH and surrounding areas.

*Whether it is improving conditions and adoptions at the dog pound, educating the public about spay/neuter and pet care issues, or organizing low-cost spay/neuter programs, we just want to make a difference for the animals.

Each day 10,000 humans are born in the U.S. - and each day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born. As long as these birth rates exist, there will never be enough homes for all the animals.  Each year, in this country alone, millions of healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are killed because there are not enough homes for them all. An estimated 15 million dogs and cats must be killed each year in this country because no one wants them. They are abandoned, abused, neglected, and unknown by many people.  Many people don't realize they can find a good pet at their local shelter or animal rescue.

These animals have originally come from a variety of sources such as (but not limited to): puppy (pet) mills, pet stores, backyard breeders and people who no longer have time for them or didn't realize what all was involved in taking care of that kind of pet.  You will find puppies, kittens, adult cats, trained dogs, small animals, big animals, birds and more.  They are available for adoption at your local shelter or animal rescue group, right now!  In many cases there is absolutely nothing wrong with these animals.  The previous owners just could not keep them for whatever reasons.  Many people don't understand that having a pet is a life commitment for the life of that animal.  Some people can no longer keep their pets, due to life changing issues in their own lives.  Help save a life and adopt a pet today.  Many animals don't have much time.  Visit your local animal shelter or rescue today!

The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley is in need of URGENT help from rescue's and adopters every day.
20 dogs euthanized a few times a week.  This shelter provides for 3 surrounding counties and cannot keep up with updating the website and getting dogs to safety.  About 30 dogs are not on Petfinder because of the overflow so please help free up space!!
